Vintage VS Modern | Which One Is Better For You?
This week, Kevin and Eric take a look at a really cool vintage McIntosh MA 6100 integrated amplifier from the 70s and compare it to a brand new Advance Paris A10 Classic integrated amp. What works better for you? Well, you'll have to watch and then let us know in the comments.
We are excited to be able to offer the A10 Classic in our shop along with some other really cool products from Advance Paris. The A10 might be perfect for someone who wants the piece of mind that comes with a new product. It also has some modern luxuries you can't find in a 45-year-old stereo.
Don't worry, we still love to keep the vintage models rolling out the door with our happy customers. Especially some of the cool vintage McIntosh gear that comes through the shop. Sometimes you just can't beat a classic vintage stereo.
We hope you enjoy this video as much as we did making it!

    I definitely agree that the love of music comes first and the gear comes second and I've nothing against those with ultra-expensive systems if that floats their boat, but I enjoy the sound from more moderately priced gear and the satisfaction of NOT having spent an absolute fortune to have a blast listening to all of my favourite music across a variety of different genres (classical music, opera, soundtracks, classic rock, folk, ragtime, jazz, swing, country, world music, etc.). :)

    Sorry but I am not convinced this company will still be around in 10 years and I am not convinced it will sell in 10 years with the same resell value of a McIntosh. That’s what make the great vintage brands good buys.

    Hey Kevin, for over a year Ive been patiently waiting for a nice 30 minute video on the Fisher 400, 500 and 800 B and C models. Very underrated vintage units that deserve more attention. I know they can be a nightmare to service compared to comparable Macintosh units but they sound just as good. Back in the 60s, these Fisher units were the same $450 dollar price point as the Macintosh MC275.

  • @waynert3548
    @waynert3548 10 годин тому

    Great Video guys. this unit reminds me of the Vincent products. A question would be since tubes have finite use hours that's relatively short compared to other components inside the unit, what would you do when the tubes need replacement?

    • @waynert3548
      @waynert3548 10 годин тому

      Hmm. I guess if I listened to the unit 3 hours a day, the tubes could last up to 3350 days. about 9 years. Most people don't listen daily. maybe nothing to worry about then.

    The Advance Paris seems really nice! A two year warranty, though? All my Macs (C33, MC2255, MC2105s, MC30s, etc.) are 40-60 years old. I've had most of them serviced, but it was generally pretty minimal and they've all gone decades without needing anything. One MC2105 has been a bass guitar amplifier, a PA amp, a studio amp, dragged around the country without a case (and without a front glass) for years, and still sounds amazing. Dave O'Brien used to laugh when I brought it in to his clinics back in the day, knowing that even though it looked like hell, it was going to beat the specs. Sure enough. But, I bet the Advance Paris does sound great.

    I am from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and met Ray Karnes (RIP) in his retail outlet when I auditioned his speakers. From his obituary: He was the owner of Karns Electronics for 50 years. When Raymond was young the Kansas City Star labeled him "Boy Hero" for saving his mother's life. He was an airplane pilot, radio pioneer, an inventor with two patents, he also recorded and made records

    I had a pair of tools approach me back in 2005 and they gave me "the pitch". I had subtly heard about the scam but being kind of an audiophile myself, I knew that there was "something" not right so I turned them down. A week later in a Lowe's parking lot, I got accosted again only this time I had gone online and before UA-cam, Social Media and all, there were web forums and there was a great one dedicated to these clowns. I did end up paying $220 for a set because I knew what the "deal" was and I have to say, they honestly weren't bad for my home gaming system and didn't sound bad playing music through at house parties and such - plus, I did get a set that looked absolutely cool. They lasted easily 9-10 years and I gave them away to a friend when I moved. Anyway, again in 2006 this time I was approached and I was with my girlfriend at the time and she witnessed a side of me she never thought she'd see. When approached by the mega-tools, I decided to, let's say "over-exaggerate" my excitement for shitty knock-off speakers even going so far as to dance like an imbecile when they told me they would cut the price from $3100 to $1500. I said to my girl, "Oh my GOD, babe!! That's a $1600 savings - amazing!!!!" Then, they would take an additional $300 off to make it $1200. At this point I pretended to cry and praise Jesus for this good fortune even to go so far as to try and hold hands with the mega-tools in prayer. My girlfriend was laughing uncontrollably until one of the "salesmen" knew I was clowning him and he grabbed his buddy and tried to leave and I said, "no! don't go! I'll give you $2000 for them... please!!!!!" The one guy called me a "f**king a**hole" and they left. While they were driving away, I proceeded to "dance" for them as they left the parking lot. If anything I ever wished to go viral at the time, it would have been that. But, alas, camera phones were still in their infancy.

    I was looking for a pair of medium-sized speakers to replace my Bose 901's because modern stereo amps and receivers don't have a tape loop switch. I saw those JBL L100 and thought that I found them... Then I saw the price. No thank you. $5000/pr is too rich for my blood. I had a set of Cerwin Vega's 18" and yes they got dinged up and the foam rotted. They were powered by a Pioneer A-80 Amp. It was 150 watts per channel amp. But I found that it didn't do very well on the bass side.

    come on, this small FiiO cant be compare to 870 Sony, its like to say Volkswagen is similar to Maseratti. I do have this 870 and around 100 cassette deck players (sony, yamaha, denon, technics, Nakamichi, Akai, Marantz etc) and this sony is one of the best of all of them so dont say is similar, in reality FiiO is not even close to that. ps on your measurements at the ent the grath is showing a peak signals so Bass, as you know high frequencies are never equally to bass in records but mutch lover and you wont see high frequencies and sonically on any mensurements. other wise good deck wopuld be never produced and we all will have cheap sh...t players is are so close to high end players.

    Well, comparing the A-10 to the McIntosh MA 6100 is like comparing the Acura NSX to a Ferrari 308 and subsequent 328. I don't question the good quality and reliability of the NSX but, if given a choice, I'd go straight to the Maranello product. Ditto for this amp comparison, if I was in the market for a 2 channel amp in that price range, the MA 6100 would be my choice by far. I'd rather have the real thing than an inspired version and Made in China with no proven track record of reliability. We all know the Binghamton product will be around many more years and always serviceable and repairable.

    I still believe it gets down to Sound vs Cost! If you had the bucks in the 60's & 70's! The top of the line stereo equipment can still hang with today's elite equipment! But just like the old hand wrapped guitars they had a more individual sound compared to machined wrapped guitars today that have a more modular sound! Vintage Stereo Equipment can't compete with even low end modern amps as far as power or the modern speakers because of the technology jump! But I'm not trying to make my ears bleed! Or try to hear frequencies that can only be heard by my dogs! As far as movies, DVDS etc! The new systems are bad ass! Vinyl, cassettes, 8 tracks or reel to reel the new systems sound thin to me? compared to the 60's & 70's Pioneer, Sansui, Sony & yes I'll say it Toshiba Amps & Speakers sounded better fuller or richer? maybe it's because of how I listen to the music as a teenager? But unless you were a Sabbath Fan in the early years? Most of the sound was controlled by the treble & Midrange or that's how it sounded? Ozzy & Sabbath had bottom in their music! Sansui & Pioneer had a good bass sound! Give me an older Amp with a pre amp built in it, a couple of mono blocks, equalizer, subwoofer, and a decent pair of 3 way speakers and it'll compete sound (stereo) wise against top modern amplifier! And it all still might be cheaper than the new system! Things were built hand back then! Why else are these vintage systems still working and being sold at 3-5 times more then when they were brand new still setting on the selves? I don't think you can compare vintage stereo vs modern stereo components! It's like comparing Black Sabbath vs Metallica! Only White youngins think there's a comparison! Anyone growing up in the 70's knows there's no comparison not even close! At least to Sabbath Bloody Sabbath! Then it's a crap shoot after that! But I believe the vintage high dollar systems can hang with their Modern Brothers! But the real comparison is to slap on the Super Fly Album or War The World is Ghetto and or Black Sabbath Sleeping Village & Warning! Then you know a true comparison of vintage vs modern! CMTFU!

    Subwoofers have been the most notable audio improvement in my lifetime since the CD. I am still using my Hitachi DD turntable from the early '80s. It sat in the closet for 25 years or more. Took it out and it still worked so just figured to use it until it dies. I always thought digital was cleaner is all. I can still get lured into a session by analog. Digital really lends itself well to modern recordings, which are getting so good, that the goal post for where diminished returns begins, is hovering right at the fringes of budget audio gear. So much so, that I no longer care about upgrades. Not to mention the convenience. I can have hi-fi at work now with nothing more than a pair of powered speakers and a cell phone.

    I can definitely see how these are attractive to guys who like all-in-one wonder boxes, but the more features that I see on the list the less I want it! I prefer my Pre-Amp separate from my Power Amp and so on. Adds a lot of redundancy if not as clean as just one big box! Maybe I want to change my DAC/Preamp/Streamer/Amp etc. Obviously not the products for me. Appreciate the video as always!

    Hilarious 😂. Seemingly EVERY single time a new name manufacturer shows up with the latest "🔥 hot" wares (IMHO) it seems to get the attention of the rest of the HiFi retail establishment, who trip over each other like falling dominoes. And then here we go again, heaven forbid - nobody wants to be the last dealer on the bandwagon.... else they appear not hip. This in effect proves there's only so much vintage Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui equipment left to go around. The public's insatiable and unquenchable thirst for 60's-70's high value (or) good deals just keeps getting stronger.

    I am prejudiced because I have a 6100 but the Advance really sounded good when I listened to it up at your shop.

    Well Kevin, as an authorized dealer perhaps you could mention to Advance Paris the advantages of offering a wood cabinet option... explain it to them. Looked awesome.

      If he speaks Chinese maybe. Designed in France, MADE IN COMMUNIST CHINA TO KILL McIntosh. Like Luxman and Quad anf Castle and Leak and Mission, CHICOMS BUY THE BRANDS AFTER DESTROYING THEM. Skylabs didn't tell you that.

    Emotiva a-2 for $549 and it appears to have a more robust power supply than this, but it is some serious eye candy
